Ashoka's Conversion at Kalinga
The Bloodbath
Emperor Ashoka, the grandson of Chandragupta Maurya, waged a brutal war against Kalinga (modern Odisha). The battlefield was strewn with 100,000 dead and 150,000 enslaved.
The Remorse
Walking among the corpses, Ashoka was overcome with remorse. He converted to Buddhism, renounced conquest, and dedicated his life to dharma.
The Legacy
He built stupas, sent missionaries to Sri Lanka and Greece, and inscribed rock edicts promoting non-violence and religious tolerance — making him one of history's most remarkable rulers.
