The Black Magician
After his family was cheated of their inheritance, Milarepa learned black magic and killed thirty-five relatives. Overcome with remorse, he sought out the guru Marpa.
The Stone Towers
Marpa subjected him to years of building and demolishing stone towers as purification. Milarepa finally achieved enlightenment through solitary meditation in Himalayan caves, composing songs (dohas) that became treasures of Tibetan Buddhism.
The Lesson
Even the gravest sins can be purified through genuine remorse, submission to a true teacher, and dedicated spiritual practice.
