Fifty-four acres of forest on Malabar Hill — worth a fortune, priceless to its owners — hold Mumbai's dakhmas: circular stone towers where Parsis have laid their dead for the sky for three centuries. No corpse may defile earth, water, or fire; the vultures were the fourth element's priests. Then the vultures died.
