The Anger of Saraswati
In Kanchipuram, Brahma performed a great sacrifice. Tradition says that honour for Saraswati, his consort, was delayed at the rite тАФ and the goddess of learning was wounded in her pride. She did not curse him the way sages curse. She called on the river Vegavati, and sent her down upon the yajnashala as a night flood.
Becoming the Dam
To guard the sacrifice, Vishnu did what no warrior could do. He lay down тАФ across the river's path, his own body the dam тАФ and the deluge broke against him and stood still. But darkness remained, and in darkness fear floods higher than water. So the Lord made a second miracle: he lit a lamp, a flame so steady and bright that the night had no argument left against it.
Vilakkoli
That place is Thiruthanka, in the cluster of Vishnu shrines around greater Kanchi, and its Lord has been worshipped ever since as Deepa Prakasha тАФ in Tamil, Vilakkoli Perumal, the lamp-light God. The image keeps the story alive in its very posture: reclining yet alert, one hand raised in blessing, as if at any moment ready to answer both the flood and the dark.
Devotees still come here in their worst hours тАФ illness, debt, grief тАФ because this temple's whole message is one sentence: the flood will be held, and the light will remain. It is one of the quietest shrines of Kanchi and one of the most beloved, the God you visit when what you need is not victory but someone lying down between you and the water.
