The Giver of Fearlessness
At Thiruvithuvakkodu in Kerala, Vishnu bears the title every frightened heart prays for: Abhayapradada — 'the giver of fearlessness', whose raised hand promises safety forever.
A Hand Raised Since Forever
Among all of Vishnu's gestures, the oldest is abhaya mudra — the hand lifted, palm outward, holding no weapon at all. Its meaning has never changed: do not fear. At Thiruvithuvakkodu in Kerala, that gesture became the deity's very name: Abhayapradhaya — the giver of fearlessness.
A Small Lesson
This temple belongs to everyone living with fear — of illness, debt, grief, tomorrow. And its claim is small: come stand before the raised hand. That hand has never once lied.
