The Northern Seat of Light
High in the Himalayas at Jyotirmath, Vishnu is worshipped as the Lord who appeared to Nara and Narayana — the northernmost Divya Desam of them all.
A Divya Desam Above the Clouds
Of the 108 Divya Desams, most lie along Tamil Nadu's river banks. One stands far above all the others in every sense: Jyotirmath — the seat of light — high in the Himalayas near Badrinath. There Vishnu is worshipped as the Lord of the ground where the twin sages Nara and Narayana performed their ancient tapas.
Shankara's Northern Throne
When Adi Shankaracharya planted his four seats of learning across India, the northern one — the throne of knowledge itself — he placed here, at Jyotirmath. The kshetra the Tamil Alvars had bound into their songs became the Vedanta's own northern capital: devotion had marked the spot centuries before philosophy claimed it.
A Small Lesson
The bridge between a Tamil hymn and a Himalayan snowfield carries one sentence: for the darshan you want, no distance counts as distance. Whoever sang him in Tamil found him in Sanskrit snows; whoever climbs to find him meets the same light that has never once feared the cold.
