When One Dance Became Eleven

After Sati's death at Daksha's yajna, Shiva as Rudra danced — not in joy but in fury and grief. Each dreadlock that brushed the earth sprang up as another Rudra. Eleven stood where one had danced. The world could not hold that much fury multiplied.

The Devas fled to Vishnu. He appeared at Nangur as Paramapada Nathan, and at his sight Shiva's grief softened. Then Shiva asked a strange, generous thing: As there are eleven of me, be eleven of you — and stay. Vishnu bowed and did. The eleven Tirunangur Divya Desams — from Kavalam to Parthanpalli — are those eleven answers, standing to this day between the Cauvery distributaries.

The Gathering (Thogai)

One of those eleven holds the memory of the gathering itself. Thiruthevanarthogai — thiru (sacred) + thevanar (of the devas) + thogai (assembly) — is the place where all the Devas assembled. Two traditions braid here:

As the wedding hall: When the Tirupparkadal was churned, Sridevi as Mahalakshmi rose from its waters and was set upon Vishnu's chest. That was, in effect, the wedding of Perumal and Thayar, and every Deva came to witness it. The Lord was therefore called Devanayakan — lord of the Devas — and she, Kadalmagal Nachiyar — daughter of the ocean.

As the council: When the Devas later gathered again to see Vishnu's eleven forms arrayed for them, they made this courtyard their sabha. The tank is still Sopana Pushkarini, the vimana Sopana Vimana, and the deity Deivanayakan stands facing east while Kadalmagal faces him — two who met with a heaven as witness.

Sage Vasishtha is also said to have worshipped here, adding a rishi's quiet penance to a gods' loud assembly. Perhaps both are true: sometimes the holiest crowd is Devas in thousands, sometimes one sage alone — and the same Lord receives them.

What Remains

Every year in Thai (Jan–Feb), the eleven Tirunangur Perumals are carried on Garuda Vahanas to a single field for Garuda Sevai, while Tirumangai Alvar arrives on his Hamsa Vahana and recites the pasuram for each shrine. For one evening, the assembly happens again — not as myth but as paddy-field procession, with loudspeakers and children on fathers' shoulders, the village remembering what the Devas once did in silence.
