The Eleventh Answer

When Fury Multiplied

After Daksha's yajna, Shiva as Rudra danced — not in joy but in grief and fury. Each dreadlock that brushed the earth sprang up as another Rudra. Eleven stood where one had danced. The world could not hold that much fury multiplied.

The Devas fled to Vishnu. He appeared at Nangur as Paramapada Nathan, and at his sight Shiva's grief softened. Then Shiva asked a strange, generous thing: As there are eleven of me, be eleven of you — and stay. Vishnu bowed and did. The eleven Tirunangur Divya Desams — from Kavalam to Parthanpalli — are those eleven answers, standing to this day between the Cauvery distributaries.

Arimeya Vinnagaram — Where Hari Resides

Among them, Tiruchirai Vinnagaram holds the old name Arimeya Vinnagaram — the place where Hari (Vishnu) resides. Sage Uthanga is said to have done penance here, and local memory adds that Govardhana himself descended here at Shiva's call — Vishnu's mountain-form answering a Shaiva prayer, as if to prove the two were never separate.

One fury became eleven. Grace answered by becoming eleven too — and Tiruchirai keeps its quiet share of that answer.
