Every Chithirai, Kallazhagar leaves his hill at Alagar Koyil and walks to Madurai — the brother who refuses to miss his sister Meenakshi's wedding.
A Brother on a Hill
In the Alagar Hills above Madurai stands Tirumalirumcholai — Kallazhagar, the Handsome God. His sanctum is on the hill; his sister Meenakshi reigns in the city below.
The Walk to the Wedding
Every Chithirai (April–May), Kallazhagar leaves his hill. For nights he processes down — through forests, villages, and finally into the Vaigai river at Madurai — where the city waits. By tradition he arrives just after Meenakshi's wedding to Sundareswarar, blesses the couple, and returns.
The walk itself has become Tamil Nadu's largest temple festival — not because the theology demands it, but because a brother who keeps walking down a mountain for his sister is a story no one is willing to let end.
