Where the Goddess Walks First
In almost every temple, Vishnu's sanctum leads. At Naraiyur, Vanjulavalli Nachiyar walks ahead of him — because here, the bride's family gave her away.
Medhavi's Daughter
Near Kumbakonam, the sage Medhavi performed long penance, and its fruit arrived in person: Lakshmi herself took birth as his daughter, named Vanjulavalli.
Srinivasa Comes Asking
And who came asking for her hand? Srinivasa — Vishnu himself. The marriage was performed with all rites, but one clause entered legend permanently: because this was the house that gave the bride away, the bride's honour would always come first here. That is why Naraiyur is still called Nachiyar Koil — the Goddess's temple. Her sanctum greets the entrance; festivals begin with her honours; the pilgrim's circuit starts at her feet before reaching her Lord's.
The Kal Garuda Wonder
The temple's Garuda — Kal Garuda, the stone eagle — carries a marvel of his own: an image four men can normally lift grows so light during festival processions that six bearers toss it dancing through the streets, and tradition counts each toss against coming rain. Priest-servers report the weight returning only when the deity is back indoors.
Together the two legends make this shrine one of the most human in the entire canon: a God who respects his in-laws' house, and an eagle who answers prayer by getting lighter. In both cases, greatness shows itself by yielding.
