[BEGINNER]
Navroz (Nowruz, "new day") is the Parsi New Year โ and, by legend, three thousand years old, instituted by the mythical king Jamshed. Indian Parsis following the Shahenshahi calendar celebrate it in August (the calendar, uncorrected for leap years, has drifted from spring); Iranian Zoroastrians keep it at the vernal equinox. Either way, the rite is renewal: new clothes, a scrupulously cleaned house, prayers at the agiary (fire temple), charity to the poor, and long visiting rounds sealed with sagan (good-luck tokens) and feasting โ dhansak, patra-ni-machhi, ravo, falooda.
The festive table holds symbolic foods; families remember the departed with prayers; and Udvada โ home of Iranshah โ fills with pilgrims through the season.
[INTERMEDIATE]
Navroz's drift is itself history: the Shahenshahi ("royal") calendar Parsis carried from Iran never intercalates, so its New Year slides through the seasons over 1,440 years; reformist Fasli (seasonal) Parsis celebrate at the equinox instead โ a friendly calendar schism that occasionally gives Mumbai two Navrozes. The day's liturgy centres on the Jashan thanksgiving ceremony and remembrance of the fravashis (guardian spirits), linking the New Year to the Muktad days honouring the dead that precede it.
[SCHOLAR]
UNESCO inscribed Nowruz on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list (2009, extended multinationally) โ a rare case of a festival shared across Zoroastrian, Baha'i, Kurdish, Central Asian, and Shia traditions. The Parsi August Navroz is the Indian expression: a tiny community (under 60,000 in India and shrinking) keeping a Bronze-Age New Year alive through cuisine, charity, and fire-temple devotion โ and through the demographic debate (conversion, intermarriage, birth rates) that shadows every Parsi gathering.
