Druze Faith

Section 1: Overview

[BEGINNER]

The Druze faith (Arabic: Tawhid, "the Unitarian doctrine") is a monotheistic religion that emerged in the 11th century in the Fatimid Caliphate (Egypt and the Levant). The Druze are a distinct religious community of the Middle East — primarily in Lebanon, Syria, Israel/Golan Heights, and Jordan — numbering roughly one million people worldwide, with a growing diaspora in Europe, the Americas, and Australia.

The faith is esoteric and closed: its full teachings are known only to the initiated (uqqal, "the wise"), while the majority of the community (juhhal, "the ignorant") live as faithful members without access to the secret doctrine. One cannot convert to the Druze faith — one is born into it; the community is endogamous.

Core beliefs:

• One God — the absolute, unknowable unity (Tawhid)
• Reincarnation — the soul is reborn immediately in another body, for good or ill
• The covenant — the pact of obedience to the divine mission
• Loyalty to the land of residence — "loyalty is a religious duty" — the Druze doctrine of wala
• The five cosmic principles — symbolized by the five-coloured Druze star (green, red, yellow, blue, white)

[INTERMEDIATE]

Origins — the Fatimid era: The Druze faith arose from Isma'ili Shia Islam in the reign of the sixth Fatimid caliph, al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah (996–1021 CE), who ruled from Cairo. A movement around the Persian preacher Hamza ibn Ali proclaimed al-Hakim's divinity as the manifestation of the cosmic Intellect and announced the end of the previous religious era. When al-Hakim disappeared (1021 CE — his death or disappearance is debated), and when the movement's missionaries were persecuted, the faith's expansion halted; it survived in the mountains of Lebanon and Syria, where its missionaries had already won communities.

The theology of Tawhid:

• God is one and unknowable — beyond all attributes and description
• The cosmic Intellect — the first creation, the mediator between God and the world; identified (in the faith's history) with al-Hakim
• The five principles — Intellect, Soul, Word, Preceding, and Following (the "five limits"), personified in the five great missionaries of the faith (Hamza ibn Ali and his four deputies)
• The unity of all religions — the Druze teach that all previous revelations (including the Qur'an, the Bible, and the Torah) were stages of the one truth, now revealed in its final form
• Reincarnation of the soul — the soul passes from body to body; the quality of each life determines the next; the final goal is union with the divine

The sacred texts: The Druze scripture is the Risalat al-Hikma ("the Epistles of Wisdom"), a collection of 111 epistles composed in the 11th century, in Arabic, by Hamza ibn Ali and his deputies. The texts are studied only by the uqqal, who meet in the khalwa (the house of retreat) for the weekly study of the doctrine. The faith has no mosques, no temples, no pilgrimage, and no public liturgy — its worship is entirely interior and private.

The community structure:

• The uqqal (the initiated) — both men and women, recognized by their white or dark robes and head coverings; they lead the religious life and resolve community disputes
• The juhhal (the uninitiated) — the majority, who live by the faith's ethics without the esoteric knowledge
• The Ajmawid — the spiritual head of the community in each region
• Sheikh al-Aql — the chief religious leader (in Lebanon and Syria, appointed by the state)

Ethics and identity: The Druze are famous for:

• Absolute loyalty to the state in which they live — the doctrine of wala, which has made them trusted soldiers and citizens from the mountains of Lebanon to the Israeli army
• Honor and solidarity — the community's mutual support and defense
• Equality of men and women — women may be uqqal and are respected as spiritual equals, a notable feature of the faith

Section 2: The Druze Star and Symbols

[BEGINNER]

The Druze star — a five-pointed star in five colours — symbolizes the five divine principles and the cosmic order:

• Green — the Intellect (al-Aql), the universal mind
• Red — the Soul (an-Nafs), the universal soul
• Yellow — the Word (al-Kalima), the divine speech
• Blue — the Preceding (as-Sabiq), the power of will
• White — the Following (al-Tali), the power of action

The star, and the khalwa (the simple gathering house), are the visible signs of the faith — deliberately modest, reflecting the religion's insistence on interiority over outward display.

Section 3: The Druze Today

[BEGINNER]

The Druze are a significant political and social force in the modern Middle East:

• Lebanon — the Druze of the Chouf mountains, led for decades by the Jumblatt family, are a major political community
• Syria — the Druze of the Suwayda region (Jabal al-Druze) are a substantial community with a long history of autonomy
• Israel — the Druze of the Galilee and the Golan Heights are full citizens; Druze men serve in the Israeli military, and the community holds a unique, respected place in Israeli society
• Jordan — a smaller Druze community lives around Amman and Azraq

Contemporary themes:

• The diaspora — since the late 19th century and especially after the Lebanese civil war, large Druze communities have formed in Europe, the United States, Canada, and Australia; the faith's closed nature is maintained through endogamy and the uqqal's leadership
• Survival of a minority — the Druze's small numbers, closed membership, and exposure to the region's conflicts make survival a constant concern; the community's discipline and solidarity are its answer
• Recognition — in several countries, including Israel, the Druze are recognized as an independent religious community with their own courts
• Scholarship — the faith's secrecy limits study; academic work relies on the public uqqal teachings and the published texts

The Druze faith's historical importance lies in its demonstration of a religion that has preserved an esoteric core for a thousand years — a Unitarian theology, a doctrine of reincarnation, a covenant of loyalty — while shaping the political life of the Levant out of all proportion to its numbers.

Known Limitations

1. The Druze faith is intentionally esoteric; this entry presents only its public teachings, and scholars disagree on several points.
2. The divinity of al-Hakim is a matter of faith; historians treat it in its Isma'ili context.
3. The faith's origins in Isma'ili Islam and its later independence from Islam are debated.
4. Population figures vary widely; diaspora numbers are uncertain.
5. The political roles of the community in Lebanon, Syria, and Israel are complex and dynamic; treated here only briefly.

Recommended reviewers: A Druze religious leader (uqqal or Sheikh al-Aql representative), a scholar of Middle Eastern religions, an expert on the modern Levant.
