Heraka

Section 1: Overview

[BEGINNER]

Heraka is the indigenous religion of the Zeliangrong people — the collective name of the Zeme, Liangmei, and Rongmei Naga communities of Manipur, Nagaland, and Assam. It is a reform movement within the older Naga animist tradition, founded in the early 20th century by Haipou Jadonang (1905–1931) and carried forward by the great freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu (1915–1993).

The name "Heraka" means "come and see" or, in common interpretation, "the path of truth." Heraka teaches the worship of one supreme God, Tingwang (also called Gwangwang), the creator, and rejects the many taboos, superstitions, and blood sacrifices of the old religion while keeping its moral heart and its identity.

Core beliefs:

• One supreme God — Tingwang/Gwangwang, the creator of all
• Morality and truthfulness — right living as the essence of religion
• No blood sacrifice — the reform abolished animal sacrifice
• Community and identity — Heraka as the spiritual foundation of Zeliangrong unity
• The sacred Tingkao Ragwang festival — the annual thanksgiving to God

[INTERMEDIATE]

The founders: Haipou Jadonang (1905–1931): Born in Kambiron (Tamenglong district, Manipur), Jadonang received what he and his followers understood as divine visions calling him to reform the religion of his people. He taught the worship of the one God Tingwang, abolished animal sacrifices and the prohibitions of the old faith, and organized his followers into a movement that combined spiritual reform with political awakening — including resistance to the colonial administration's exactions and to the practices of the local chiefs. The British arrested him, and he was executed in 1931 at Nungba; he is revered by the Zeliangrong as a martyr and messianic figure.

Rani Gaidinliu (1915–1993): Jadonang's teenage disciple, Gaidinliu — a Rongmei woman of exceptional courage — carried the movement forward after his death. The British, alarmed by the spread of her preaching, arrested her in 1932; she was imprisoned for fourteen years, earning the title "Rani" (queen) from Jawaharlal Nehru, who met her in prison and later championed her cause. After independence she continued her work of religious and social reform among the Zeliangrong, establishing Heraka worship and its institutions. She was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1982, and her legacy is honoured as a symbol of indigenous resistance and women's leadership in Northeast India.

The faith: Heraka theology centres on:

• Tingwang (Gwangwang, "the great God") — the creator and sustainer
• Horang — the benevolent spirits of the old religion, retained as intermediaries under God
• Prayer without sacrifice — prayer, hymns, and right conduct replace the old rituals
• The Heraka Hymns — a body of devotional songs, in the Zeme/Rongmei languages, composed from the movement's founding onward
• Tingkao Ragwang — the annual festival of thanksgiving, observed with feasting, singing, and community gathering, around December–January

The Heraka organization: The movement is organized through village Heraka associations and a central body, the Tingkao Ragwang Chapriak (TRC), which coordinates worship, festivals, and the community's cultural life. Heraka is today recognized as the principal indigenous religion of the Zeliangrong and is officially recorded in the census among the Naga religious communities.

Section 2: Practice & Festival

[BEGINNER]

Daily and weekly practice: Heraka families pray daily, often in the morning and evening, with simple hymns; the village community gathers for prayer on important days. The hearth and the family are sacred; elders lead the prayers.

The Tingkao Ragwang festival: The annual festival, also known as the Heraka festival, is the great event of the year: communities come together for worship, the singing of Heraka hymns, feasting, and the reaffirmation of the faith's message — one God, one people, one truth.

Lifecycle rituals: Birth, marriage, and death are marked by Heraka prayers and community gatherings, without the animal sacrifices of the old religion. The faith's ethics — truthfulness, hard work, mutual help — govern daily life.

Section 3: Heraka Today

[BEGINNER]

Heraka remains a living faith of the Zeliangrong people, with its strength in Tamenglong (Manipur) and the Zeliangrong areas of Nagaland and Assam, and among the diaspora in the cities of the Northeast and beyond.

Contemporary significance:

• A symbol of identity — Heraka is inseparable from Zeliangrong identity; its festivals and its history — Jadonang and Gaidinliu — are taught as the people's heritage
• Indigenous recognition — the movement participates in the indigenous-peoples forums of India and the world, presenting Heraka's monotheistic reform as a model of indigenous religious renewal
• Women's leadership — Rani Gaidinliu's legacy makes Heraka one of the few traditions of the region shaped decisively by a woman leader
• Dialogue and pressure — like other indigenous religions, Heraka faces conversion pressures (largely to Christianity) and the challenges of urbanization; its leaders work to transmit the faith to the young

Heraka's historical importance is considerable: it shows an indigenous religion renewing itself from within — abolishing its harsher practices, unifying its people under one God, and producing, in Rani Gaidinliu, one of the most remarkable women leaders in modern Indian history.

Known Limitations

1. Heraka's theology and history are largely oral; published accounts are few and often from within the movement.
2. Jadonang's messianic claims are a matter of faith; historians treat his movement in its colonial context.
3. The relation of Heraka to Christianity in the region is complex and sensitive.
4. Internal diversity among Zeme, Liangmei, and Rongmei practice is simplified here.
5. The movement's political history (including conflicts with the colonial state) deserves fuller treatment.
