Ganga Avataran — The Descent of the Ganges

Bhagiratha's Penance

King Bhagiratha performed severe penance to bring the river Ganges from heaven to earth to purify the ashes of his 60,000 ancestors. Shiva caught the falling river in his matted locks to break her descent, then released her to flow to the ocean.

The Power of the Ganges

The Ganges is considered the most sacred river in Hinduism. Her waters are believed to purify sins and grant moksha (liberation). The city of Varanasi (Kashi), situated on her banks, is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites.

Symbolism

The descent of the Ganges represents the flow of divine grace from heaven to earth. Bhagiratha's penance shows that devotion and perseverance can move heaven and earth.
