Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) — The House of God

Four Doors, One Humanity

Guru Arjan designed the temple with four entrances, symbolizing that all castes and faiths are welcome. The temple was sacked multiple times by Afghan invaders and rebuilt by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who covered it in gold foil — hence "Golden Temple." The sarovar (holy tank) is believed to have healing powers.

The World's Largest Free Kitchen

The langar (community kitchen) serves 100,000+ meals daily, embodying Sikh principles of equality and seva (selfless service). Everyone sits on the floor together, regardless of rank or religion — a radical egalitarian practice that has defined Sikh identity for centuries.

Architecture

The temple represents a synthesis of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles — the dome is Mughal-influenced, while the interior is decorated with frescoes in the Kangra school style. The causeway leading to the sanctum symbolizes the journey of the soul toward the divine.
