  **Budha Matha** (elderly mother) is the central protective deity of the **Bhumij** tribal community (~2 million) in Jharkhand and adjoining West Bengal. Sarnaism is the indigenous tribal religion centered on reverence for nature and village protective deities. Budha Matha's shrine is an **aniconic pot** — not a carved or formed idol, but a sacred vessel representing the mother goddess. This aniconic tradition reflects the tribal theology that the divine is not captured in human form but is present in natural objects and forces. The Bhumij believe Budha Matha protects the village from harm, ensures good harvests, and maintains the balance between humans and nature.
