Budha Matha — Bhumij tribal mother
Sarnaism / Bhumij / Tribal — ancient tradition to present
Budha Matha (elderly mother) is the central protective deity of the Bhumij tribal community (~2 million) in Jharkhand and adjoining West Bengal. Sarnaism is the indigenous tribal religion centered on reverence for nature.
Her shrine is an aniconic pot — a sacred vessel rather than a carved idol, reflecting tribal theology that the divine is present in natural objects.
Sarhul (March-April) is the most important Bhumij festival — spring worship of Budha Matha as protector. Manasa Puja (July-August) honors her as protective mother figure with snake goddess connections.
The Bhumij continue their Sarnaism tradition today with Budha Matha central to village identity and protection.
