Trimbakeshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, located at the source of the Godāvarī river (India's 2nd longest sacred river). The Linga is unique: it has three faces (Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva) worn almost flat by time.
Trimbakeshwar is one of the four Kumbh Melā sites (along with Haridwar, Prayagraj, and Ujjain). Every 12 years the Siṃhastha Kumbh Melā brings millions of pilgrims to bathe at the Godāvarī source. The current temple (1755 CE) was built by the Peshwa Balaji Bajirao. Its proximity to the birth of the Godāvarī river gives it unique pīṭha-status: the source-waters of this south-Indian Ganga begin here.
