Mayūra, the resplendent peacock, is the vāhana of Lord Kārttikeya (Skanda/Murugan), the god of war. The peacock's vanity and beauty remind the devotee of the dangers of ego, while its ability to consume venomous snakes symbolizes the triumph over destructive passions. In South Indian iconography, Kārttikeya is often depicted riding upon this magnificent bird.
