Navjote: The Parsi Initiation

"Good thoughts, good words, good deeds — tied around the waist, three times daily renewed."

The Practice

Navjote ("new offerer of prayers") initiates the Parsi child into the faith: bathed, dressed, and invested before priest and family with the sudreh (white muslin shirt — the "advantageous path," its giriban pocket collecting good deeds) and the kusti (72-thread lamb's-wool cord, wound thrice around the waist for thought/word/deed, knotted front and back). The child recites the Fravarane — "I choose" (fravarane) the Good Religion — and feasts follow on banana leaves.

• Age: enjoined at 7, permitted to 15 (Vendidad 18.54 warns against going ungirded past fifteen); Parsis initiate at 7–11, Iranians traditionally at 15 — adulthood's threshold, when choice means something
• Daily renewal: the kusti is untied and retied with prayer (Nirang-i kusti) on waking, before prayers, after ablutions — the pledge re-signed several times a day for life
• All are invested: women and men, priests and laity alike — unlike the Hindu upanayana, no caste or sex bars the thread
