Indra's Rage
Every year the people of Vraja worshipped Indra, king of heaven. Eight-year-old Krishna asked the question no one dared: why not honor Govardhana hill instead? He gives our cows grass and water. The simple logic convinced them, and they celebrated the hill instead.
Enraged at losing his tribute, Indra unleashed seven days of apocalyptic rain on Vrindavan.
The Little Finger
Eight-year-old Krishna walked to Govardhana hill and lifted it тАФ with the little finger of his left hand. For seven days the mountain stood as an umbrella over everything alive: cattle, children, elders, even the fire kept burning beneath it. Seven days of holding up a hill, without complaint, while a god exhausted his tantrum upstairs.
On the seventh day Indra surrendered, descended, and performed the coronation of the boy himself тАФ naming him Govinda, protector of cows.
Annakuta
The festival survives as Annakuta: mountains of food piled before the deity each year, the hill worshipped as Giriraj тАФ God's own body. What was once lifted as an umbrella became the object of gratitude forever.
And the teaching stands in the image itself: power that demands worship gets a lesson; power that becomes shelter gets a festival.
