Subhadra

Subhadrā Devī

Subhadrā (Subhadrā Devī) occupies the central position in the Puri Jagannāth trinity, flanked by Balabhadra (her elder brother, to her right) and Jagannāth (Krishna, her younger brother, to her left). In the daily darśan at Puri, she is the yellow-faced, smaller deity carved from the same sacred neem wood (dāru).

Role in the trinity

• Balabhadra — pure white, embodying purity and strength
• Subhadrā — yellow, embodying consciousness and motherhood
• Jagannāth — dark black-blue, embodying the cosmic Krishna

In Vaishnava theology she is often identified with Yogamāyā — the primal shakti who enables Krishna's līlā. She is the Devī alongside the two brothers, making the Jagannāth temple a rare three-deity complex that is simultaneously Vaishnava AND Shakta.

Ratha Yātrā — Subhadrā's own chariot

During the annual Ratha Yātrā (June–July), Subhadrā rides her own chariot Darpadaḷana ("Destroyer of Pride"), painted red and black with golden accents. Her chariot has 12 wheels and is 44 feet tall. The yatra proceeds from the Puri temple to the Gundicha Temple, a distance of 3 km, and returns after 9 days.
