The Shakti Peethas are sacred shrines of the Goddess where parts of the body of Sati fell when Lord Vishnu cut her corpse into 51 pieces with his Sudarshana Chakra. These peethas are associated with the mythological story from the Shiva Purana where Sati self-immolated at Daksha's yagna and Shiva, in his grief and rage, carried her body until the chakra severed it. Each peetha has a specific significance in Shakta Tantra.
