Lumbini in the Terai of Nepal is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama — the place where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to the Buddha while grasping the branch of a sal tree in the Lumbini Garden. It is the first and most fundamental of the four great Buddhist pilgrimage sites.
