Story & Significance
Attukāl Pongala (February–March, 9-day festival) is the world's largest religious gathering of women — Guinness-certified at 5 million in 2009. Women cook pongala (sweetened rice) in terracotta pots on brick-stoves arrayed for 15 km through Thiruvananthapuram streets. The goddess Attukāl Bhagavatī is identified with Kaṇṇagi (heroine of the Tamil epic Silappatikāram). Men are forbidden to enter during Pongala.
Worship & Festival
Daily aarati (dawn + dusk); abhisheka; flower and coconut offerings; evening deepa-dhyana. Annual festival features procession, special darshan, distribution of prasadam, and gathering of community.
