Bhīmaśaṅkara — Sixth Jyotirlinga
No primary scriptures are catalogued for this entry yet. If you know of scriptural references we have missed, please contribute them.
Bhīmaśaṅkara is the sixth of the 12 Jyotirlingas, on the Sahyadri mountains of the Pune district. The Liṅga is svayambhū — massive, self-manifest, set in a rich Sahyadri biosphere.
The Bhimashankar region is a Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot: home to the endangered Indian Giant Squirrel (Maharashtra state animal), the Malabar whistling thrush, and 1,000+ species of medicinal plants. The pilgrimage integrates ecological consciousness with Shaivism — the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary (130 km²) surrounds the temple.
