Chāmuṇḍā Devī
Who She Is
Chāmuṇḍā Devī temple at the Banerji tributary of the Bāner in Kangra Valley is the principal Shakta shrine of the Himachal Pahari region. The goddess is one of the Saptā-mātrikās (seven mothers) and the slayer of Chanda and Munda (hence Chāmuṇḍā). The sanctum is famous for its Panchamuṇḍa-āsana (5-skulls seat), and the puja is traditionally performed by Jogis of the Gorakhnātha order, not Brahmins. Distinct from Chāmuṇḍā of Mysore (which is in Karnataka).
