Story & Significance
Chāmuṇḍēśvarī atop the 1,062m Chāmuṇḍī Hill is the iṣṭa-devī of the Wadiyar royal family of Mysore. The temple's 7-tier gopura is visible from Mysore city. At the foot of the hill: the 5-m Nandi sculpture (carved 1659 from a single rock, one of the largest monolithic Nandis in India). The annual Mysore Daśarā (Sept–Oct) — the 10-day festival showcases the goddess in procession atop a golden ambarī (howdah) on an elephant. 15+ lakh pilgrims.
