Chintamani of Theur

Chintāmaṇi Ganapati of Theur (Pune district) is the fifth Ashtavinayak. Chintāmaṇi — "the jewel that banishes anxiety" — was recovered by Ganesha from the greedy sage Kapila's son.

Tradition & Significance

Theur's temple received extensive patronage from Peshwa Madhavrao I (r. 1761–1772). Madhavrao died at Theur at age 27, and his widow Ramabai committed satī here — a marker of the deep Peshwa-Ganapati attachment. Madhavrao's samādhi is on the temple grounds.
