Sacred Narrative

Dakshineśvara Kālī Temple (1855, Kolkata outskirts) is where Śrī Rāmakrishna Paramahaṁsa (1836–1886) had his defining visions of Kāli. He served as the temple priest 1855–1885. Swami Vivekananda became his disciple here. The 12 Shiva-linga temples in the complex, the Nāt-maṇḍapa, and the Panchavaṭī grove (where Rāmakrishna sat in samadhi) are all preserved. Annual pilgrimage is continuous; half a million on Kali Puja.
