Overview

Neelakanta Pillai (23 April 1712 – 14 January 1752) — upper-caste Hindu, Sanskrit-educated soldier in King Marthanda Varma's Travancore army — met a Dutch commander, a Jesuit priest, and a new faith. Baptised Lazarus (Devasahayam — "God has helped") at Vadakkankulam on 17 May 1745, he preached the equality of all people regardless of caste. Arrested in 1749, tortured, paraded, exiled to the hills — and shot at Aralvaimozhy (Kattadimalai) on 14 January 1752. His body rests by the altar of St. Francis Xavier's Cathedral, Kottar (Nagercoil).

• Firsts: first Indian layman beatified (2 December 2012, Kottar) and canonised (15 May 2022, Francis) — neither priest nor religious, a married palace official
• Miracle: recognised February 2020, clearing canonisation
• Feast: 14 January; patron of India and of persecuted Christians
• The dispute, honestly noted: some Hindu groups hold he was executed for sedition, not faith; period documents show court-official conversions were not tolerated, and the Vatican's cause found martyrdom. Both positions are recorded here.
