Lazarus the Martyr โ India's First Lay Saint

Neelakanta Pillai (23 April 1712 โ 14 January 1752) โ upper-caste Hindu, Sanskrit-educated soldier in King Marthanda Varma's Travancore army โ met a Dutch commander, a Jesuit priest, and a new faith. Baptised Lazarus (Devasahayam โ "God has helped") at Vadakkankulam on 17 May 1745, he preached the equality of all people regardless of caste. Arrested in 1749, tortured, paraded, exiled to the hills โ and shot at Aralvaimozhy (Kattadimalai) on 14 January 1752. His body rests by the altar of St. Francis Xavier's Cathedral, Kottar (Nagercoil).
