Girijatmaj of Lenyadri

Girijātmaja (Pārvatī's son) at Lenyadri, Pune district — the only Ashtavinayak temple installed in a Buddhist-era rock-cut cave (Cave 7). The deity is enshrined above a 300-step climb.

Tradition & Significance

The Lenyadri cave complex was originally Buddhist (c. 1st–3rd c. CE). Cave 7 was later converted to house the Girijātmaja Ganesha, whose mūrti faces north. The temple is uniquely associated with Pārvatī — Girijātmaja means "Son of the Mountain-Daughter (Girijā)." Pilgrims climb 307 stone steps to reach the sanctum.
