Sacred Narrative
Gokarṇa Mahabaleshwara houses the Ātma-liṅga that Rāvaṇa was carrying from Kailash to Lanka. When Ganeśa (disguised as a boy) tricked him into setting it down, the liṅga sank partly into the earth. Rāvaṇa tried to pull it out, leaving it twisted (called Mahā-balā-līṅga = "great-power-liṅga"). One of the most sacred Shiva-liṅgas — pilgrimage equal to Kailash itself per tradition.
