Hanumān-garhī ("Hanuman's fort") — a 10th-c. fort-shaped temple to Hanuman. Tradition: Hanuman remains resident in Ayodhya to protect Rama's kingdom even after Rama's ascension. 76-step climb to the garbha-griha; inside, Hanuman holds Rama and Lakshmana on his shoulders. Every pilgrim to Ayodhya first visits Hanumān-garhī before other shrines.
