Sacred Narrative
The SnÄna YÄtrÄ of Puri (Jyeį¹£į¹ha PÅ«rį¹imÄ, MayāJune) ā the annual bathing festival ā marks JagannÄtha, Balabhadra, and SubhadrÄ being bathed with 108 pots of water on the SnÄna Mandapa (outside the main temple). After this bathing, the 3 deities are said to fall ill for 15 days (Änasara) ā during which time they are NOT visible to the public. On Ratha YÄtrÄ day (2 weeks later) they emerge "healed" and begin the chariot journey. Half a million pilgrims attend SnÄna YÄtrÄ.
