Story & Significance
Harmandir Sāhib (Golden Temple) of Amritsar is the supreme Sikh shrine — though all Sikh gurdwaras are equally sacred, this one is the spiritual center. Founded 1577 by the 4th Gurū Ram Dās, completed 1604 under Gurū Arjan, gold-plated by Ranjit Singh in 1830. The temple sits in the middle of a sarovar (sacred tank); 4 doors open in 4 directions symbolizing openness to all. Daily ~100,000 pilgrims; langar (free community meal) feeds ~50,000 daily, ~100,000 on festivals. The Akāl Takht (seat of Khālsā authority) adjoins the Harmandir.
Worship & Festival
Daily aarati (dawn + dusk); abhisheka; flower and coconut offerings; evening deepa-dhyana. Annual festival features procession, special darshan, distribution of prasadam, and gathering of community.
