The annual Chithirai festival (April–May) has the unique feature: the deity Kallaḻagar wades across the dry Vaigai river-bed to attend the divine wedding of Meenakshi at Madurai. Lakhs of pilgrims line the river. The deity enters Madurai 3 days into the festival.
