Sacred Narrative

Kanyā Kumārī (also known as Devī Kanyā Kumārī) is both a place (India's southernmost tip, where 3 oceans meet) and a goddess. The goddess is Parvati in her form as a virgin, who performed tapas for Shiva for an unrealized marriage. The Vivekananda Rock Memorial — where Swami Vivekananda meditated in 1892 before leaving for Chicago to deliver the 1893 Parliament speech — is a few hundred meters offshore. Sunrise and sunset over the 3-ocean horizon are uniquely visible here. One of the 51 Shakti Pīṭhas (Sati's back).

Why This Entry Matters

India's sacred landscape embraces all faith-traditions — Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, Sikh, Jewish, Zoroastrian, tribal, regional-folk — each with its own cosmology. This entry honors Hindu on its own terms.
