Sacred Narrative

Kottiyoor Mahādeva Shiva shrine uniquely operates for only 28 days per year (Vaishakha, May–June). The rest of the year the "temple" is forest. During the season, a temporary shrine is erected on the banks of the Bhavani river; after 28 days it is dismantled. Tantric ritual involving animal sacrifice is central.
