Mahākāla of Ujjain
Mahākāleśvar — Time-Lord Shiva at Ujjain Jyotir-liṅga
Location
- Place: Ujjain, Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh (23.1825°N, 75.7681°E)
Story & Significance
Mahākāla Jyotir-liṅga at Ujjain — 3rd of the 12 Jyotir-liṅgas — is unique: daily Bhasma Ārati at 4 AM, using ash from cremation fires. This is the only shrine where such a ritual is performed. The liṅga faces south (dakṣiṇa), the direction of Yama — making Mahākāla the Lord of Time AND Death. The annual Simhastha Kumbh Mela (every 12 years on the Kshipra river) draws ~15 crore pilgrims; the 2016 Simhastha was attended by ~6.5 crore. The temple's association with Kalidasa, Vikrama, and the 64 Yoginīs makes it one of the richest symbolic sites in India.
Worship & Festival
Daily aarati (dawn + dusk); abhisheka; flower and coconut offerings; evening deepa-dhyana. Annual festival features procession, special darshan, distribution of prasadam, and gathering of community.
