Mallikārjuna Śrīśailam — the hill shrine and its approaches
The site, not the deity
The companion file mallikarjuna covers the deity; this one covers the shrine, the
approach and the two claims the old description attached to it that a guardian should handle
carefully — the Satavahana foundation and the Bhramaramba Śakti Pīṭha.
The temple complex at Śrīśailam sits on the Nallamala hills above the Krishna river. The approach has been a defining part of the pilgrimage: traditionally a climb on foot through forest, now with a road, which has changed the character of the yātrā — a point that is often left out of the reverent summary and belongs in the record. The mahāśivaratri observance is the peak, with abhiṣeka of the lingam and continuous recitation; the shrine's own calendar runs through the lunar year.
On the Bhramaramba claim: the tradition places the Bhramaramba Devi shrine here, and the story of Siva's appearance as the hunter who tests Arjuna is the same story the deity entry uses. Whether Bhramaramba appears in the standard enumerations of the fifty-one Śakti Pīṭhas is a question this record should not answer confidently — the lists differ, and in some enumerations she does not appear at all. A Śakti shrine at a Jyotirlinga is not incompatible in the southern tradition, which routinely houses both, but the specific enumeration claim must be sourced.
On the Satavahana foundation: there is a tradition of a shrine here from the early historical period, and there are early inscriptions in the region, but the temple as it stands, and the attribution of its foundation to a particular dynasty, should be taken from the epigraphy and the ASI account rather than from summary pages. Nineteenth- and twentieth-century additions are documented and should be labelled as such, since the building is a palimpsest rather than a single-period monument.
Sources and what is still unverified
Nilakanta Sastri; Zaehner; the ASI reports; the Nandyal gazetteer.
For a named guardian, ideally a Telugu speaker: the temple's own inscriptions and their sequence; which enumerations of the Pīṭhas include Bhramaramba and on what authority; the current state of the forest road and the pilgrim route; and the shrines inside the complex and their custodians.
