Mātaṅgeśvara is the only living temple of the Khajuraho complex (the rest being UNESCO museum-sites). The 4-foot yellow-sandstone Liṅga is said to be rising by 1 inch every 100 years, held down by an iron ring.
Built by the Chandela king Yashovarman c. 954 CE. The Liṅga is unique: a 4-foot yellow sandstone monolith (the rest of Khajuraho uses pink sandstone). Tradition holds that it is rising — extending further upward by about 1 inch per century. A massive iron ring encircles it, said to restrain the growth. When the linga fully emerges, the current Kali Yuga ends.
