Munneswaram
Munneswaram (Munneśvarar) is one of five ancient Shaiva ishvarams of Sri Lanka — temples said to have been established in the Tretā Yuga and reconsecrated by Rama after the Rāvaṇa war. These five are:
- Naguleswaram (Point Pedro, Jaffna — northernmost)
- Thiruketheeswaram (Mannar — northwest)
- Munneswaram (Chilaw — west coast)
- Tenavaram (Matara — southernmost, destroyed in 1589)
- Koneswaram (Trincomalee — east)
The four-temple complex
Munneswaram is uniquely a four-temple complex — all on one grove:
- Principal temple to Munneśvarar (Shiva)
- Bhadrakāḷī temple (worshipped with animal sacrifice — the only Kāḷī temple in Sri Lanka where this survives)
- Kāḷī amman shrine for Buddhist worshippers
- Pillaiyār (Ganesha) shrine
The coexistence of Shaiva Brahmin worship, popular Kāḷī worship, and Sinhala-Buddhist devotees is a vivid example of Sri Lanka's cross-religious sacred landscape. Buddhists visit Bhadrakāḷī for protection and offering; Tamil Hindus visit the main shrine; all share the sacred tank.
Modern history
The temple was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1578 and again in 1619, as part of their anti-Shaiva campaign in Sri Lanka. The current structure dates from the 17th century, after the Dutch (less hostile to Hindus than the Portuguese) allowed reconstruction. The festival calendar survived through the colonial period and is now robust, especially the 15-day Mahotsava in August–September.
