Namdev: The Bhakti Saint Who Bridges Traditions
Namdev is unique among bhakti saints because his compositions are venerated in both Hindu and Sikh traditions. His shabads appear in the Guru Granth Sahib alongside those of Hindu saints and Sikh Gurus.
His Life
Born into a tailor (chhipa) caste in Maharashtra, Namdev faced discrimination but refused to accept caste restrictions on spiritual practice. He:
- Composed abhangas in Marathi
- Became part of the Warkari tradition
- Traveled extensively sharing his devotion
- Had dialogues with saints across India
Namdev in Guru Granth Sahib
Guru Arjan included 16 of Namdev's shabads in the Guru Granth Sahib. These are:
- Written in Punjabi (not Namdev's native Marathi)
- Set to various raags
- Sung as part of regular Sikh worship
