Unusually, each liṅga is colour-coded: Sūrya red, Candra white, Aṅgāraka red, Budha green, Guru yellow, Śukra white, Śani black, Rāhu blue, Ketu grey. The temple is believed to have been an ancient astronomical observatory. Every 12-year Kumbha festival at Ujjain draws parallel fire-rituals here
