Navagrahas
The Nine Planetary Deities — Cosmic Influences on Human Life
Overview
The Navagrahas (नवग्रह) — "nine planets/seizers" (nava = nine, graha = planet/seizer) — are the nine planetary deities in Hindu astrology (Jyotish Shastra). They are: Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangala (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu (North Lunar Node), and Ketu (South Lunar Node). In Hindu cosmology, these celestial bodies influence human affairs — their positions in one's birth chart (janma kundali) affect personality, fortune, health, and destiny. The Navagrahas are worshipped to appease their influences and mitigate negative effects. Each graha has its own day of the week, color, gemstone, mantra, and form of worship.

Core Teachings
Cosmic Influence on Human Life
The teaching: celestial bodies affect human affairs. The positions of grahas at birth (determined by precise astronomical calculation) create the individual's karma template. This is not fatalism — remedies (upayas) can mitigate negative influences.
Karma and Free Will
The teaching: some karma is already fixed (past actions), but present actions can change future outcomes. Navagraha worship is one form of action to shape destiny. This balances determinism with the possibility of change.
Remediation (Upaya)
When grahas cause difficulties, various remedies are used:
- Mantras (chanting the graha's mantra)
- Gemstones (wearing the graha's gem)
- Puja (worship with specific procedures)
- Donation (giving to those associated with the graha)
- Fasting (on the graha's day)
The Balance of Light and Shadow
Every graha has both beneficial and challenging aspects. Rahu and Ketu (shadow planets) are especially complex — they represent: what we crave but cannot fully possess (Rahu) and what we have already transcended (Ketu).
Daily Practice [BEGINNER]
Day-Based Worship:
- Worship the graha of the day each week
- Recite the mantra for that graha 108 times
- This practice creates alignment with cosmic rhythms
Navagraha Mantra (Combined):
Om Somaya Mangalaya Budhaya Brihaspataye Shukraya Shanaye
Rahave Ketave Namah
Chant 108 times on Saturdays (for Rahu/Ketu) or Sundays (for Surya)
Gemstone Awareness:
- If you wear gemstones, understand: each graha's gemstone has specific effects
- Never wear gemstones without Jyotish guidance — improper use can cause harm
Daily Practice [INTERMEDIATE]
Shani Worship (Saturday):
- On Saturdays, recite Shani mantra 108 times
- Light a lamp (preferably sesame oil) and offer black til (sesame)
- Recite: "Om Shanaye Namah" or the Shani Chalisa
Brihaspati Worship (Thursday):
- Thursdays dedicated to Brihaspati (Jupiter)
- Wear yellow, offer yellow flowers, recite Brihaspati mantra
- Recite: "Om Brihaspataye Namah"
Fasting Practice:
- Fast on the day of the graha causing difficulty
- This practice creates spiritual receptivity
- Break fast after moonrise with simple food
Daily Practice [SCHOLAR]
Astrological Study:
- Learn to read the janma kundali (birth chart)
- Understand: what each graha's position means in the rashis (signs) and bhavas (houses)
- This requires years of study but begins with understanding the basics
Mantra Meditation:
- Choose one graha and do 40-day mantra sadhana
- Each graha has a specific mantra:
- Surya: "Om Hram Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah"
- Chandra: "Om Hram Hreem Hraum Sah Somaya Namah"
- Mangala: "Om Hram Hreem Hraum Sah Mangalaya Namah"
- Budha: "Om Hram Hreem Hraum Sah Budhaya Namah"
- Brihaspati: "Om Hram Hreem Hraum Sah Brihaspataye Namah"
- Shukra: "Om Hram Hreem Hraum Sah Shukraya Namah"
- Shani: "Om Hram Hreem Hraum Sah Shanaye Namah"
- Rahu: "Om Hram Hreem Hraum Sah Rahave Namah"
- Ketu: "Om Hram Hreem Hraum Sah Ketave Namah"
Philosophical Analysis:
- Compare Hindu cosmology with Mesopotamian/Classical planetary systems
- Analyze: how did Jyotish develop its unique system?
- Study the relationship between Vedic deities and grahas (e.g., Indra → Mangala)
