Sacred Narrative

Orchha (Bundelkhand) is the only place in India where Rāma is worshipped as King rather than as a deity. The idol, originally from Ayodhya, was brought to Orchha by Queen Gaṇeśkuwarī for overnight rest. When morning came, the idol refused to leave. So Rāma became the King of Orchha — with armed police-guard salute daily, held court (darbar), and is removed to his palace for "sleeping hours" each night. Unique in Hindu India.
