Sītā Kund of Sitāmarhi

Sītā Kund — the birthplace of Sīta in the Janakpur region

Location

  • Place: Sitamarhi, Sitamarhi, Bihar (26.5833°N, 85.4833°E)

Story & Significance

Sītāmarhī ("Sita's abode") marks the Bihar-side birthplace of Sītā — King Janaka ploughed a field and uncovered her. The Sītā Kund (sacred well) is the traditional site. The annual Sītā Navamī (April–May) draws pilgrims from Janakpur (Nepal) where the Janakī Temple commemorates the same event. Sītāmarhī has been a pilgrimage since early-modern times; rebuilding has occurred after many earthquakes.

Worship & Festival

Daily aarati (dawn + dusk); abhisheka; flower and coconut offerings; evening deepa-dhyana. Annual festival features procession, special darshan, distribution of prasadam, and gathering of community.

Why This Entry Matters
