Rishikesh — gateway to Himalayas + global yoga
Location
- Place: Rishikesh, Dehradun, Uttarakhand (30.0869°N, 78.2676°E)
Story & Significance
Rishikesh — the ṛṣis' abode, at the foothills of the Himalayas where the Ganges descends from the mountains — is the global capital of yoga and a pilgrim gateway to Char Dham. The famous Lakshman Jhūla (rope-bridge, 1923; replaced 2022) crosses the Ganges; Rām Jhūla is another. The Pāremārtha Niketan hosts the International Yoga Festival every March. Rishikesh is a temple-plus-ashram city — the Beatles came here to study meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1968.
Worship & Festival
Daily aarati (dawn + dusk); abhisheka; flower and coconut offerings; evening deepa-dhyana. Annual festival features procession, special darshan, distribution of prasadam, and gathering of community.
