Saman

Saman Deviyo is one of the Four Guardian Deities of Sri Lanka — the deity of Śrī Pāda (Adam's Peak), the mountain where the Buddha is said to have left a footprint on his third visit to the island. Saman's worship bridges Buddhist and Hindu religious life in Sri Lanka.

Saman is one of the satara varam deviyo (Four Guardians of Sri Lanka):

  1. Vishnu — Vibhiṣaṇa (Lankapura) form
  2. Saman — of Śrī Pāda
  3. Kataragama (Skanda-Murugan)
  4. Vibhishana / Natha (varies by tradition)

Saman is uniquely Sri Lankan — his name derives from Yakshaka Sumana, a yaksha chief converted by the Buddha on the Buddha's second visit. Adam's Peak (Śrī Pāda) is a multi-religious pilgrimage: Buddhist (Buddha's footprint), Hindu (Shiva's footprint), Muslim (Adam's footprint), and Christian (St. Thomas's footprint). Saman is the sacred mountain's guardian across all four traditions.
