Sacred Narrative

The Saura tribe (~500,000) of the Eastern Ghats have a sophisticated religious tradition centered on Idital wall-paintings — ritual diagrams of village-life and ancestors painted on the inside walls of Saura houses. The paintings are commissioned for specific ritual purposes: marriage, birth, death, harvest. The priest-artist (Kuranmaran) performs the wall-painting while in trance. Saura art has UNESCO recognition and has been globally-exhibited.
